LACHSA REACHES OUT

LACHSA serves  students from more than 80 school districts in the county, but often qualified student artists and their parents don't know about the school or the opportunities it provides as a tuition free public arts high school.  Because any community, especially an educational one, is stronger when it is culturally and socioeconomically diverse, the VA Department supports LACOE and LACHSA's outreach efforts to create pathways to LACHSA for children across the LA landscape.

One of the earliest efforts I undertook as a board member is to put heads together with parent and fellow member Lynn Alvarez and form an Equity and Access Task Force.  I have an illustrious group of members who represent all of LA’s board districts, major community-based organizations, philanthropy, artists, and activists all committed to this goal. We’re all committed to LACHSA building a student body that mirrors the richness and interplay of cultures and socio-economic backgrounds that make Los Angeles an exciting place to live and make art. We will make a concerted effort to build pipelines for talented students from across the city to prepare them to be LACHSA students. Stay tuned—the task force will gather over the course of the spring and present a report before the school year is out.

The Summer Arts Conservatory at LACHSA is also a terrific way for students between the ages of 9 through 15 to experience the school, learn new skills, and prepare their own pieces for the LACHSA Visual Arts high school admissions portfolio review. This program offers comprehensive arts training in five departments:  cinematic arts, dance, music, theatre and visual arts. Every morning students take five different classes in each of the departments while in the afternoons they focus on a single department for their Conservatory Intensives.  If you know of any students who would benefit from this program, please let them know about it.
